Oddball Art Stamps - Technique a Week - Digital Stamps and Gesso

Technique A Week
Today it's my pleasure to share with you a project I've created for the Technique a Week feature over at Oddball Art Stamps

This week I want to talk about Gesso, and how I use it with Digital stamps to let me use wet mediums without my printer in running.

Gesso is a wonderful thing, as it lets you prime your surface to take a mixture of different art mediums.  Gesso comes in Black, White and Clear.  I won't be looking at Black Gesso today, as it doesn't work with the technique i'm featuring.

The technique is very simple.  Print your digital stamp onto your paper/cardstock of choice, for today's project I've used Index Cards.  Which are very cheap, and therefore don't handle water very well.

However, add a coat of gesso, and your Index Card becomes stiffer, has a slightly gritty texture, and can handle a lot more water than an untreated Index Card.

Below you'll see one Index Card with my image printed on it, and covered with a coat of Clear Gesso, and next to it an Index Card with the image printed then covered with a coat of White Gesso.

As you can see you get quite different results;

 The Clear Gesso, lets you see the Index Card beneath the image very clearly, and the image itself is quite bold.
With White Gesso, the background of the Index Card and the Printed Image are both toned down, and paler.

I love using both types of Gesso, my choice is simply based on what i've printed my image onto, if I've a background a want to see or if I've added layers of other mediums that I want to seal before adding more.

For today's project I went with the Clear Gesso;
 The image I've used is a brand new release from Oddball Art Stamps, called image #386 Ginny the Gardener

I've coloured her with a mix of Derwent Inktense pencils, Faber Castell PITT Pens, and white gel pen for highlights and doodles.

To Embellish my card I added some doodles, a hand drawn frame, and some polka dot paper tape.

Here's a close up;

I hope you like today's project, and find this quick comparison/technique useful.  I love how Gesso lets me use any medium I have in my art stash without having to worry about printer ink spreading.

Thank you for the information. The gesso sure does help give the digital version a much more bold color than you could normally give without risk of the ink running. I will have to give it a try! Gorgeous, too!
