Growing in Unity - Day 2 Kitty Loves Mixed Media

Welcome to Day 2 of my Growing in Unity Week.

For today's project I took a MDF Standing Plaque and gave it a wee makeover;

The Plaque stands at roughly 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide.  When I started work on this project, I had absolutely no idea where I was going with it, I was just having fun playing with some metallic paper, gesso and stamps.

The first thing I did was to apply a coat of green acrylic paint to each piece of MDF .  Then I added a strip of copper textured metallic paper to the front and back of the plaque, I tore the strips to give a nice rough edge, then stamped the chequerboard pattern in black archival ink , next I added a thin layer of white gesso to tone everything down a little.

I then accentuated the edges of the metallic paper with some green Derwent Inktense Pencil, which I blended with a little water.

Here's a picture of the back of the plaque;
I then turned my attention to the front of the plaque, and thought about creating my focal point.  I chose to use the lovely Heart trio stamp for my focal point.  I stamped the Heart onto tissue paper before adding to my plaque, as I wanted to make sure I had a nice clear impression of the stamp.  I then coloured the Hearts with Derwent Inktense Pencils, before going over the outline of the image with a Black Faber Castell PITT Pen to redefine the outline.

All of the stamps on this project come from the Vibes set by Jolande & Marleen.

I found some wonderful wooden cat and dog elements in my stash, and decided that one of the cats would be perfect for this project.  I love how it looks like the cat is playing with the edge of the heart on the plaque.

I coloured the cat with a Black Faber Castell PITT Pen, and then once dry I added some pearl green H2o paint to add a wonderful shimmer.  Before adding the cat to the plaque, I stamped some Black Archival ink with the chequerboard stamp onto the cat, it's quite faint, but gives a nice subtle contrast to the shimmer effect of the paint.  I then adhered the cat to the plaque with some gel medium.

Next I decided the plaque need some text, so I stamped the 'Love' sentiment in Black Archival ink, on the front and base of the plaque.

To finish my project, I took one of the Red Derwent Inktense Pencils and went along the thin edge of the base and plaque to tie it in with the rest of the project, and give it a nice finished look. I blended the pencil with water, adding some of the colour to from the edges to the rest of the plaque to further tie it all together.

That pretty much sums us how I created my 'Kitty loves Mixed Media' Plaque.  I hope you've enjoyed reading how I went about creating this project, and don't forget to check out the other wonderful Mixed Media stamps available on the Unity Stamp Co website, there is an amazing selection, you will be spoilt for choice.

Thank you for visiting with me today,
Bye for now
Happy Crafting

Thanks for detailing your steps so well! I've not really done much mixed media in the past. I enjoy seeing projects done in this style though. I think I'm going to have to give it a try soon :)
