Oddball Art Stamps - Technique a Week - Fun with Gelatos and Distress Crayons

Technique A Week
Today it's my pleasure to share with you a project I've created for the Technique a Week feature over at Oddball Art Stamps.  I've created an Art Journal Page, using Faber Castell Gelatos and Tim Holtz Distress Crayons.  You may think that these are pretty much the same product, which is what i thought originally, but there are some major differences between the two, which makes them both excellent additions to your collection of art and crafts tools.

Faber Castell Gelatos
Creamy texture like a lipstick
Mixable with water and other art mediums
Can be applied direct to paper/canvas or with paintbrush
Rubs off paper/canvas like oil pastels, does not dry
Can be used on stamps when mixed with water.

Tim Holtz Distress Crayons
Creamy texture like a lipstick, slighly drier than Gelatos
Blendable on paper/canvas
Dries once applied to paper/canvas, requires water and friction to reactivate and blend. Once dry is stable unless wet again.
Can not be used on stamps.

Basically they both react to water, but in different ways.  For the best explanation of how Distress Crayons work, check out Tim Holtz Youtube Videos, he explains it so much better than I could.

They do work nicely together as you will see below;

Distress Crayons applied to Gesso'd Journal page.

Faber Castell Gelatos add to same Journal page, some blending with water and brush.

More Distress Crayon and Gelato applied to page, blended without water.

Gelato crushed and blended with water, to create a thick paste.  Can be thinned with water. [ Could use matte or gloss media gel instead of water to create a glaze which will be permanent once dry.]

Gelato paste spread over Journal page with palette knife, water can be added with brush to blend further, but will blend colours already on page.

More Distress Crayon added to Journal Page

Digital Image printed, partially coloured with Alcohol Markers and fussy cut.  This image is 'Alice the Artist image #381'

Image adhered to Journal Page with Matte Gel Medium

Once image is dry, Gelatos and Distress Crayons added.  Text stamped onto 'Canvas' with Archival Ink.

More colour added to Journal page with Faber Castel PITT Pens

Liquitex Modelling Paste added to Journal Page through Stencil, and directly with palette knife. Then left to dry.

Gelato added over Modelling Paste, blend with finger and a little water.

More colour added to Modelling Paste with Gelatos and Distress Crayons.  More colour added to Journal page with Faber Castell PITT Pens.  Continue adding layers of colour until your happy with the result.

Finally white splatters added to Journal Page with Ink spray.  Highlights added to modelling paste and other areas with Faber Castell Large Brush Pen - White.

Here's a couple of close ups

Here's the finished Journal Page;

I hope you've found this Step by Step interesting.  I had great fun creating this Journal Page and experiment with the Distress Crayons and Gelatos.  If you have any questions, then please leave me a comment or drop me an email, and I'll happily answer you.
